Google “Mary Poppins” and you will inevitably turn up endless articles referencing the “dream nanny” who could organize anything in an almost (or mostly) magical way, awe at the way that she seemed prepared for every situation and photos of the way she turned chaos into order. With Mary Poppins Returns in theaters, it seemed fitting to use her as the shining example of my first quarter topic: getting and staying organized.

When life gets hectic and you are pulled in a million directions, it becomes increasingly difficult to stay organized. Sometimes it’s a matter of letting things get a little messy and other times it’s an inbox cluttered with thousands of emails – read and unread, important and junk. While some may find calm in putting everything in its place, filing documents away, picking up around the house and similar organizational tasks, many of us just find it overwhelming.

If you fall into the latter category, maybe it’s time to think a little more like Mary Poppins. In her song A Spoonful of Sugar she shares with the Banks children that work – cleaning and organizing in this case – doesn’t have to feel like work if you approach it in the right frame of mind.

“In every job that must be done there is an element of fun.”

In the context of your daily work, getting and staying organized may not but fun, but it doesn’t have to be a burden either. Similar to the way I did, ask yourself: “How would my life be different with a better system in place?”

The answers may vary, but I can guarantee that creating (and sticking with!) a better system to stay organized will have numerous positive effects on your work and your business. We’ve all been in a place, once or twice, where we spend more time searching for a tool than it actually takes to complete the task using said tool. Imagine being so organized that you know exactly where to find the necessary tool to complete a task, and you’re able to complete it quickly and move on.

Getting and staying organized will allow you to be more efficient in your work, which in turn allows you to be more productive, profitable and stress-free.

As we fully dive into 2019, channel your inner Mary Poppins and make organization a priority. Let me help you throughout the next few months with tips and tools to be your most organized self. Together we can put better systems in place and reduce the feeling of chaos in our lives.

And who knows, maybe you’ll find the fun and “Snap! The job’s a game.”
